Raising children is the greatest responsibility we are given and one of the hardest things we do in our lives.  As an adult, it is stressful, exhausting and challenging.

Parents spend long hours worrying about their children, and trying to figure out the best way to help them develop into mature, responsible adults.  What if you are not an adult yourself and you are raising a child?  This is the challenge that teen mothers face.

Teens not only need to worry about the day to day raising of the child but they also worry about working and trying to get an education.  There are only so many hours in the day and the stress and worry can be overwhelming.

You can read article after article on teen parenting and find many success stories of young women who were able to balance their checkbook, raise their child, finish school and find a job.  But when you are trying to do it, it seems impossible.

Teens moms have to deal with so many problems that older mothers do not have to contend with.  One of the most hurtful things for young mothers is the opinion that other people develop of you.  Suddenly, peoples preconceived notions about teen mothers come to the fore and you will receive looks, comments and maybe even scorn and pity from those around you.

Young teen mothers tend to end up raising their child without the father.  Boyfriends will often drop out of the picture or become unreliable, unable to deal with the responsibility and adjustments that you must make for your child.  Finding enough money to properly raise your child is an issue too.

Young dads are often in school also and can’t provide the financial support necessary to raise a child.  This means many young mothers end up living with family.  While family can be a great source of support, they can also be a source of frustration.  Many grandparents will want to take over raising their grandchild or will have endless comments and suggestions on how to raise the child.

Any article on teen parenting will encourage you to find support where you can because the road is hard enough but it is important to try to establish boundaries and limits to the help you receive.

Often the biggest challenge teen mothers’ face is trying to complete their education and effectively raise their child.  In today’s world, a college degree is important in order to get a good paying job.
