Do I Have to Breast Feed?

A mother’s breast milk is the perfect source of food and nutrition for your babies first 6 months of life and is an invaluable source of food and nutrition well beyond that. Breast milk provides better protection from infections, diarrhea, and respiratory problems.
In addition, breast milk is easier to digest, reducing spit up, gas and the chances of colic. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of allergies, asthma, and childhood obesity. Breast milk promotes healthy brain and nervous system development and is a cheaper source of food than formula.
Breastfeeding is the preferred option of pediatricians because it supplies the perfect combination of nutrients and food for your child. It is nature’s perfect formula and breastfeeding children are supplied with their mother’s natural antibodies. While this is wonderful, there are a number of mothers who can’t supply breast milk for health, psychological or work related reasons.
Breastfeeding is often a luxury that working women can’t maintain once their maternity leave ends and they find themselves really unable to pump a proper supply of breast milk in their work conditions. Reality is reality and children are adaptable to the conditions they encounter.
The great news is that baby formula is better than it’s ever been and supplies your child with all the nutrition, minerals and proteins they need to grow and thrive. You don’t have to get the pricey formulas to get the benefits either. While Enfamil, Similac and Nestle all make wonderful baby formulas, there are a lot of cheaper generic formulas that provide wonderful nutrition for your child as well.
While breastfeeding can be an important part of your child’s development, it is not the only part. Your love and attention is what really makes your child grow and women who don’t breast feed should not feel like they are mistreating their child or denying their child advantages in this life.
All women have to stop breastfeeding at some point and most stop before their child reaches a year anyway. Feel good about your decision to breast feed, your child’s development and your value as a mother.
