“All parents should have an interest in child development journals.”
The journals can contain a gold mine of useful information that you can use in the day-to-day raising of your child. This information can range from some basic things to do all the way to some fairly complex theories about the how’s and why’s of child behavior.
One of the challenges is selecting a development journal for a child is which one to focus on. This can be difficult since there are literally hundreds of development journals available to you.
One way to begin to narrow your search is to be clear in your own mind what it is you want to know about. Among the areas of expertise that child development journals focus on are physical development, cognitive development, behavioral development, mental health, education, well you get the idea.
Some of these development journals can be intimidating just to look through. You need to remember that many of the articles are based on current or past research that the author needs to publish information about.
These same articles are written for other people who either teach at a college level or may be doing similar research. As parents you and me are not people they have written for. These are not articles you keep by your nightstand.
Once you get past the intimidation factor I think you’ll find many articles that will help. Whichever child development journals you select read them for what you want to know about.
Don’t spend a lot of time dwelling over the scientific gobbly gook that is often included. Go to the heart of your interest.
Where do you find these journals to look through? There are two primary sources and one kind of secondary source that I’ll give you. Since the development journals are academic in nature the first place to begin your search is your local college library.
Many colleges even have check outprivileges available to community members. Ask the librarian for assistance. The second place is your local public library. While they may have one or two child development journals available, usually they can get additional materials through an inter library loan. Lastly there is your friendly internet. You usually can find articles available online or downloadable.
The journal articles usually follow the same format. The beginning of the article has what is called an abstract. This is a short narrative description of the contents of the full length article. The abstract is the very first thing you should read.
This summary will let you know if the article is one you want t read about. If you choose to read the article it is best t first scan it for the main points than come back to those points that are important to you. If you read the entire article you may find yourself getting bored rather quickly.
Remember, child development journals have a wealth of information for you to use. But also remember reading one is like panning for gold you have to load your pan with a whole lot of material then sift it to get to the good stuff.
