Down Syndrome Articles

“Down syndrome articles are one of the best resources for parents, medical professionals and educators.”

Fifty years ago, little was known among the public about Down syndrome. Today, resources exist to help educate professionals and parents alike. Articles on down syndrome go a long way toward relaying information on how to guide a loved one toward a happy present and fulfilling future.  They also allow individuals and families a common ground by sharing their journey.

What is Down Syndrome?
Simply put, Down syndrome (sometimes erroneously written “Down’s syndrome”) is the existence of an extra 21st chromosome, or part of one, in all or some of the cells of the body. It is also known as Trisomy (“three chromosomes) 21 or “T21”.  Certain physical and mental traits are common to people with Down, but like everyone else, Down syndrome children and adults are individuals. The possibilities for learning, growing and achieving or maintaining one’s health are vast among the Down syndrome community.

How Can Articles Help Me?
If you are a parent or caregiver of a person with Down syndrome, the right article can put things in perspective on a difficult day, can reassure you that things are going along as they should at any stage or can simply let you know you’re not alone. Raising any child is a bit scary. Raising a differently abled individual is that much more daunting, and can feel like an enormous responsibility. Your child’s or relative’s future is in your hands, or so it feels at times. Reading an article from another parent who has been there can go a long way toward returning your confidence so you can relax and simply enjoy the experience more.

Educators can benefit from articles on the subject by gaining a greater understanding not only the specifics of Down, but of the minds and feelings of the child and his or her family. That sense of understanding, communicated during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and in general to the caregivers, will make their trust in you grow. It will also relax the child who is in your care during school hours, allowing him or her greater potential for learning. Everyone learns more easily and readily in an atmosphere of understanding and trust.

If you’re in the medical or therapeutic field (including speech therapy, occupational therapy or physical therapy), you may eventually have a Down syndrome individual under your care. Keeping up on the latest articles about new findings is a boon to you and to your staff. Make copies of articles you feel staff and colleagues should read and hand them out, or send an e-mail with a link to an article you feel is of value.

Finding Down Syndrome Articles
There are two primary sources for articles on Down: medical literature, and online. The internet can be a destination for both, however, as selections from most major medical journals are now published online. Top medical publications include the New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Medical Genetics, The Lancet and the American Journal of Human Genetics.

For articles from those who have a Down syndrome individual in their lives, try your favorite search engine. Search under Down syndrome articles + (story), (education), (resources), (support group) or whatever your current needs or area of interest are. Bookmark the ones that are a help to you; you can then return to them in the future when you need information, a confidence boost…or just a shared smile.
