Free Parenting Classes

“Can free parenting classes make you a better parent? Let’s take a look at this very important question.”

It should be a given that parenting itself is one of the most challenging and, at times, difficult tasks an adult will ever undertake. As most of us have said at one time or another “there really needs to be a license in order to raise kids.” So what are the pluses and minuses to attending these classes?

The first and most obvious reason for attending free classes on parenting is that there’re free. Beyond that simple fact the second most important reason, or maybe it really should be the first, is that you’ll become a better parent.

The downside to some these parenting classes goes back to that old saying “you get what you pay for.” Even at the bargain price of $0 they are no bargain at all. So you really need to check out any class before you put in the time to attend and worse yet maybe even apply what is taught.

Let’s look at some things you should consider when choosing these classes. First, who is offering it? Many free classes on parenting are sponsored by some community organization. Does that organization reflect your values as a parent? This is an important question to ask. Let’s say that your local Planned

Parenthood office is sponsoring free parenting classes. If you are opposed to the philosophy of Planned Parenthood you may want to think twice before attending. Likewise if Planned Parenthood is something you support it could be worth your time to attend.

Who’s teaching the class? Here again you will want to know as much as possible about the instructor and their view on parenting. Don’t be overly influenced by the number of letters behind the instructor’s name. College degree’s don’t make one an authority on parenting.

The above ideas aren’t meant to be the good or bad in your decision about attending a free parenting class. What I’m suggesting is that before you invest your time attending that you try to learn as much as you can about the class and its instructor.
