If you’re worried about what’s out there on the Internet, and in particular, what is out there for your child? You’ll be glad to learn that there are fun and educational websites for kids. That right, really appropriate sites that are not only fun, but educational for children.
From PBS to Disney, from not only fun but exciting, websites that engage your child with age appropriate activities, images, and lessons.
Most of us are all too familiar with some of the horror stories about what’s on the web. The sad thing is that most of these stories are true. Some sites that think of themselves as fun websites for kids are nothing more than crudely put together sites that cater to the lowest common denominator of those things that might interest a child. They even lump all age groups of kids together making the usefulness of the site questionable.
Now there are some things that you as a parent need to do to insure that what your child visits is a fun website for kids and that’s all. First, you will need to preview, really preview, sites where you will allow your child to freely visit. This is going to take some of your time, but it is critical to filtering out those sites that you feel are not places you want your child visiting.
What should you be looking for? One thing to check is this; does the site offer content that your child will understand. Many websites for children target specific age groups. So if your kid is 5 to 7 years old they will most likely quickly lose interest in a site designed for 3 – 5 year olds. Conversely, they may not be ready for a site that focuses on material for kids between 8 and 10 years old.
Most sites will tell you the age group they are most suitable for. If they don’t, simply look at the various offerings and ask yourself “is this content that my child will relate to?”
Other considerations for finding fun websites for kids are whether it requires that you sign up to visit the site. Here again, this can be a double edged sword. Using a site that has a membership fee often can assure you of the content your kid will encounter at that site. But again, this isn’t always true. Some sites are simply rip-offs. Buyer beware.
Of equal importance is how you allow your child to access the computer. Remember, their use of the internet should include educational and fun websites for kids. One of the surest ways to get the edge on this access is to install a filter on your system. Filters allow you to block out certain words or phrases that appear on sites your child visits.
One last important consideration is this; how much time will you be able to invest in your child’s computer access? There is no greater safe guard than the parent to insure that a child has accessed proper fun websites for kids.
