Hindu Baby Names

“Hindu baby names are great for parents who are looking for unique and special names for their children.”

Parents are often looking for something that will make their child stand out from the crowd of more common names such as Jennifer, Mary, William and James.  While these names are nice, they don’t have the exotic quality or meaning that many of today’s parents are looking for.

To fulfill the quest for uniqueness, parents are increasingly turning towards different cultures and countries to find special names for their bundles of joys.  Hindu names have become a popular choice because of their unusual sound and also their significance.  For traditional Hindu parents, choosing their baby’s name is an important and special event, filled with both family and religious customs.  While the Hindu traditions may not hold any meaning for you, it is interesting to see what drives a child’s name selection.

Many Hindu baby names are associated with gods and goddesses, divine qualities, character traits, mythological figures, parts of nature or celestial objects.  Many names are chosen based on the child’s astrological sign.  Parents use the child’s birth sign to determine personality traits and thus a suitable name to match those characteristics.  The name is given to the child at a special naming ceremony, held at least 10 days after the child’s birth but before she is a year old.  The child’s family is present as she is blessed, has water poured over her head and has her name whispered into her right ear by her father.

While these traditions are important to the Hindu people, many more people who are not Hindu are choosing Hindu names because of their beauty, uniqueness and meaning.  Here are some examples of popular and meaningful Hindu names:

For Girls:
Aruna – the sun
Chandra – moon
Deva – divine
Lakshmi – goddess of wealth
Radha – success
Prithika (Flower)
Reena (Gem)
Samali (Bouquet)

For Boys:

This is just a small sampling of the many Hindu baby names that could give your child a singular name on the class roster.  Good luck choosing the perfect name and enjoy your new baby!
