The Struggles of
Long Distance Parenting

“Many parents, unfortunately, have to partake in long distance parenting.”

The reasons for this can be varied from work causing you to be away for home from long periods of time or a divorce that may cause you and your children to be far apart.

Many new challenges arise to those who engage in distance parenting that wouldn't be an issue if distance didn't exist and they were able to have a close physical relationship with their children.

This doesn't have to be a dead end though. There are ways to keep a good relationship with your child when you do not live near them. Often children may feel that they aren't loved when their parent is far away. They may need to be encouraged on a frequent basis that it is simply not the case.

Keeping in contact on a regular basis is something that can be done via letters or phone calls to allow your child to know that you love and care about them greatly even though you are going through the difficulties of being separated.

Another way to make long distance parenting easy on your child is to keep up with a schedule of visits and contact. Allowing them to know exactly when they will see you again or when they'll hear from you eliminates that feel of uncertainty that many children feel when one of the parents do not live near them.

One of the most important things to remember in distance parenting is to not put your child in the middle of any problems between you and their other parent. This may alienate them and since communication may already strained, you don't want to strain it any further.

When you talk with your child make sure to focus on them. Let them know you're interested in their life and ask questions to engage the conversation. Long distance parenting is tough but do-able.
