“A child is a blessing from Allah.”
Muslim parents name the child with a Muslim name that has an Islamic meaning. A child not only brings joy and happiness to the parents and his relatives, but birth of a child also brings in added responsibilities.
Parents must remember that although a name is linked to a language or culture, it may not carry a good meaning. Therefore it is important to give the child an honorable name which would not cause embarrassment when he/she grows up. The prophet always suggested beautiful and god meaning names and even asked people to change their names if the meaning of it was unpleasant.
Therefore parents must come up with befitting and auspicious names for the child that will evoke blessings for the child. Names like Harb which means war, Murrah meaning bitter, Aasiyah which means disobedient could cause discomfort to a growing child and make them self-conscious and insecure. The name should be such that the child will be able to utter the name with pride and not feel humiliated.
A good name is very important to a person’s life as it is important for communicating with that person. A name indicates the religion to which he belongs to. It also brings in a kind of adornment to the person. A name also generates an impression in the minds of other people. Since a name remains with a person throughout his life, an embarrassing name could cause hatred towards his parents too.
Here are some prohibited names in Islam. Any name that means enslavement or worship besides Allah is prohibited. Abd al-Rasool, meaning slave of the Messenger, Abd al-Nabi meaning slave of the Prophet, Abd al-Ameer which means slave of the prince and names that imply submission to certain things other than Allah are termed as Haram names.
A person with such names must change names and go in for better ones. The name selected should not provoke a person to joke over that name. Naming a child with undignified names go against Islamic teachings. The prophet has commanded people to name their child with beautiful Muslim names that are not provocative.
