Parenting an Only Child

“Parenting an only child has its own advantages.”

The topmost advantage being the parents can focus completely on just a single child. Our hectic and busy schedule does not permit us to devote sufficient time that we desire to spend with our kids. So things get better when there is just one child to take care of.

Besides bringing up a child is extremely expensive and brings down your savings and bank balance. A parent with a single child will be able to provide the best education and luxuries as compared to a parent having several children.

A single child remains more attached to the parents. Excellent encouragement and support provided to the child by the parent makes the child do well in life. The extra, warmth, love and attention makes the child fell secure.

On the other hand there are also some disadvantages to it. Man being a social animal learns new things through socialization and interaction with children of the sample age group. The lessons that a child gains by interacting within one’s siblings is incomparable.

Sharing and adjusting with siblings is learnt at home. As sibling rivalry is absent in such cases a single child may not be able to deal with problems that he would come across in life. The parent needs to sort out this problem in a certain way.

The parent has to teach the childe to overcome such difficulties. Encourage the child to make friends, this way he will learn to adjust. Keep observing the child while he plays. Encourage the child to share toys. Explain to him that being selfish will make him a loner in life.

An only child depends on the parents while accomplishing activities. Try reducing this dependence by giving the child certain responsibilities and a way to handle it.

Many single kids feel that they are as good as adults and can do anything. As a parent set boundaries and explain to the child what the consequences would be if he crosses it.

This way the disadvantages of parenting an only child can turn into a positive experience. The only differences being a little more effort needs to be put in to make the child adapt to the situation.
