Parents around the world differ on style, beliefs and techniques, but on one thing they agree: parenting is rarely exactly as we thought it would be.
As many times as you’ve been surprised, these parenting facts will amaze you even more. Read on for the scoop on why parenting and childhood are more fascinating than you knew.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the lightest baby ever to be born and have survived was Christopher Williams of London, England. He was born at 16 weeks gestation and weighed just a little over 21 ounces. By contrast, the heaviest live-born baby on record weighed an amazing 22 lbs., 8 oz. The heavyweight hailed from Aversa, Italy and was born in 1955.
When it comes to sheer numbers, try these parenting trivia tidbits on for size. For example, think you’re tired? The oldest documented mother was 66 years old at the time of her most recent darling’s birth, and an 18th century Russian woman was the proud parent of 69 children (several sets of whom were twins, triplets or quadruplets).
Hoping for more than one bundle of joy? The average woman across all age groups has a one in 539 chance of giving birth to (gasp!) triplets. And if you’re the type who likes to accomplish your goals by the calendar, keep in mind that more children are born on a Tuesday than any other day of the week. As for that summer vacation, better make other plans: August is the most popular month to have a baby.
Sigmund Freud, not particularly known for a sense of humor, nonetheless left us with the following gem: He referred to his youngest daughter as his “only son”. Seems even psychoanalysts need a little parenting levity every now and then.
Nor are celebrities immune to having to buy, cuddle and stay awake for two. Cyclist Lance Armstrong, boxer Mohammed Ali and Madeline Albright are all parents of twins.
Adoption, too, is common among celebrities just as in the private sector. Rosie O’Donnel, Nicole Kidman with then husband Tom Cruise and Al Roker have all adopted. And Jessie Jackson, Eleanor Roosevelt and (believe it or not) Aristotle all were adopted. (So were former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford.
There’s a wealth of parenting trivia in the U.S. and across the world to keep us guessing, grinning…and continuously amazed at how unique becoming and being a parent can be.
