The Importance of Preschool Themes
“So, what’s your child learning at preschool? One test is preschool themes.”
“So, what’s your child learning at preschool? One test is preschool themes.”
That’s right, ask your preschool provider what are the themes they use. Why are these themes important? Those involved in early childhood education tell us that children are ready to learn very specific tasks at different ages. Themes are used to facilitate the learning tasks of preschoolers in an age appropriate manner.
As a parent taking an active role in the growth and development of their child you owe it to yourself and to your child to learn what you can about the themes in your child’s preschool. A quick search of the internet offers many resources for these themes. Your local bookstore and public library have shelves full of books on the topic of themes. In addition there usually are parenting support groups in communities that can provide information about themes for preschools.
The first thing you should look for when reviewing the theme of your child’s preschool is the outline and content of the lesson plans. Is it age appropriate for your child? Does it challenge your child to learn new information or tasks? Are your child’s senses stimulated? A close look at the lesson plans used should answer these and other questions for you. Things to look for include:
How do the themes reflect special days or holidays? Again it is your right to inquire about the preschool themes used. Let’s say you’re Jewish, how is Christmas celebrated at the preschool? Conversely, if your family is Christian you may want to know if Hanukah is acknowledged and if so how?
Your role as a parent includes paying attention to the learning style and needs of your child. Preschool themes are part of the gateway to your child’s future.
