Since teens have taken to drugs and violence, there is a trend for this style of parenting, which includes boot camps and wilderness camps to name a few.
An Extreme Measure
This parenting approach is an extreme measure to deal with a particularly difficult situation, such as drug addiction or violence.
Thankfully, the majority of parents do not have to even consider this option. All teenagers have problems and most of them can be sorted out with love and understanding.
It is only when things get out of hand that you might have to consider tough love.

However, if you have decided on this parenting approach, you must stick to it. But, make sure that the conditions in the camp are humane. You don’t want to torture your child.
All you want is a change of environment for your teen where he will get an opportunity to view his life differently and come to a point where he realizes what is going wrong in his life and how he can change it.
So, you must select the tough love course with utmost discretion. You must also know that it is an expensive affair. But, if you feel you cannot handle your teen, you have to bear the cost to see your child grow into a happy and healthy human being who can fit into the society as a responsible member.
Be Prepared for Tough Love Parenting
Also, you will face certain problems that you had not visualized before taking the decision to send your child to do the tough love course. You will miss your child, but you should stick to it. The course is as hard on the parents as on the child. You should be prepared for that.
No one would like to be in a situation when a tough love course becomes necessary. But, once you are in such a desperate state, you will have to pick up courage to take the difficult decision of sending your child away for the tough love course.

However, if you are not in that situation, you should try your best to avoid getting into it.
That is what good parenting is all about. If you have played your part as a parent well and loved your child wholeheartedly, you can avoid such tough love situations in your life. Children need love and space, they need encouragement and support, and they need praise and reprimand as well.
Parenting is a balancing act between these polarities; it is as precarious as a tight rope walk. But, it is much better to put in all the effort in good parenting to avoid facing a situation where you have to opt for tough love parenting.
